PROLOGUE:
Quote:So ive been waiting for a respec since may 14th, 3 weeks and some change since i gave up with being patient with my gimped-bad build with a flagged respec pending...
in my dismay, i stumbled across Angry Joe's game reviews... trolling youtube i saw a video, top 'x' reasons mass effect 3 sucked(dont remember the number of complaints he had, but they were familiar pains i suffered...)
i spent a full day watching almost his entire game review collection, and i saw a couple that caught my eye...
XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a game i had struggled with at one point in the past and given up on... a harsh throw-back to classic age of gaming... possibly more brutal than Demon/Dark Souls...
and Two Worlds: II, a game i had spent a LOT of time playing, 60+ hours on my first playthrough, to NOT finish the main plot, and 100+ in multiplayer... a GREAT game if you like open RPGs
i spent the last few days playing these games, and figured id tell the tale of my boredom.
So i sat down with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and started playing it again after MANY months of collecting dust on a shelf in my collection of assorted games... for those who have played it or its late-1990's original version, it isnt exactly an easy game to play...
To start out in this game, you have to make some rather serious game-changing decisions... Do you want fast research? or do you want to be able to build stuff cheap? while you wait to get your base's foundation built, you have to deal with alien invasions... you end up being faced with a series of tactical decisions you have to make... which ultimately determine your overall success in the game...
I originally started out with trying to go research heavy, knowing that a lot of the advancements depended heavily upon how fast you can get upgrades trained... but i ran into the brick wall of facility and assets production... being able to research all of my equipment in a matter of only a few days lead to me being incapable of actually producing ANYTHING... i was unable to produce satellites, which in turn reduced my amount of incoming resources(money, researchers, and engineers), while simultaneously limiting my 'rapid response' capability to deploy satellites as needed to prevent countries from abandoning my projects... safe to say, things were not pretty with my first playthrough this time around...
after having had my *KITTEN* handed to me, i tried again... with a revised strategy... rather than going research heavy, i went production heavy with workshops. i managed to crank out a number of vital satellite uplinks and the appropriate satellites to limit the withdrawl of countries to only 3 countries of my home base continent(default bonus does not get removed).
I managed to maintain, what i felt to be, a VERY successful campaign against the unknown enemies facing the XCOM Team. Playing with the 'random starting attributes' game-modifier, my initial squad was fairly hodge-podged... initially (1/2)x assault, 1x support, 1x heavy, (1/2)x sniper(before/after officer training upgrades), of generally LOW starting attributes... many of my initial squad never exceeded a base accuracy of 80% at Colonel Rank(Max level)... but as a initial start as an XCOM Commander... you often have little choice in the sacrifices made...
after a solid 20+ hours of playing the game, i managed to assemble a 'perfect' squad, 2x assault, 2x support, 2x sniper with backup heavies... perfect scores in accuracy(Squadie rank: sniper base-95, assault/support base-90, heavy base-87), ALL! ... with PSIONIC powers. their randomized willpower levels left a little to be desired, but they were the best of the best as far as small arms went, and were capable of providing at least one extra round of support with psionics in the off chance they ran out of ammo...
durring a supply barge landing, i ran into 3 squads of 3x muton elites, 1 squad of ethereal+2x muton elite, 2 squads of 3x heavy floater, and 1 squad of sectopod+2x drone... the fighting was intense... i stumbled a the ehtereal squad near a side door, which almost immediately ran off after entering the rear end... i pressed my squad forward... slowly... and they had gone into a full scale retreat... i couldnt find ANY of them... until i approached the 3 access hatches to the rear bay... assaults were staged on the rooftop ready to provide Run&Gun support, Supports were staged at the 2 'side doors', and both snipers were positoned on the 'main door' to cover the central corridor... as soon as i opened the first side door, i woke up a squad of Muton Elites and Heavy Floaters...
I proceeded to focus what fire i could on the targets available... the ground level support taking the first shot, followed by moving the sniper away from his primary door to provide BUFFED pistol cover fire(7 damage down from snipers base of 10). the second sniper(far side of the door) opened the door to see if he could get a shot on the remaining enemies before moving... and woke up the second squads of muton elites and heavy floaters... meaning these were the 5th squad to be engaged at a single time, 2x 3-muton elites, 2x 3-heavy floater, and the 1x 2-muton elite+1-Ethereal... the last squad, which still hadnt been tracked down... was still COMPLETELY MIA from the balcony they retreated to initially...
... wtf character limit... to be continued... |
